How to Design a Sustainable Future
Learn how to take climate action through design, design and build for circularity, and champion environmental justice in digital narratives.
On August 30, 2022, Practice Makes hosted lightning talks on ways designers and technologists can apply our skills to solve for sustainability, and design products that are human and life-centric. Kristy Drutman guided the speakers in a Q/A discussion unpacking the intersection of design and environmental justice.

Aidan Hudson-Lapore, Service and intervention Designer at The Policy Lab at Brown University, kicked off the night with starter guide for designers who want to work on climate change. She outlined the many skills designers can offer within a host of industry areas that could immensely benefit from our human and life-centered approach to design.

Building on Aidan’s foundational introduction, we heard from Accenture’s own Caroline Siouffi how every product’s customer journey should make sustainability relevant and actionable for everyone.
Sustainability will need to be embedded into every project — through the anthropologic lens we set out with, through an analysis of innovators and products already proving that digital powers sustainable, and by experimenting cross-functionally on opportunity areas across the value chain.
Caroline is also growing her team within the Sustainability Studio, and has a few open positions she is looking to fill: Global Communications Strategy Director, Sustainability, Business Designer, Sustainability, Service Design Lead, Sustainability
Robert Boler rounded out the event by sharing stories about sustainable products and services whose experience strategies often omit “sustainability” entirely from their customer-facing value proposition. He helped us better understand that in order to be competitive with wasteful lifestyles, living sustainably should be a great experience. This includes the application of digital products in all sorts of industries, such as transportation, housing, consumer goods, logistics, just to name a few.
Living sustainably should be a great experience.
We are so grateful to our speakers for sharing their insights with us. If you were not able to make the live event, you can view the recording here!
